What does a court interpreter do?
A court interpreter enables oral communication between people who speak different languages in legal proceedings. They interpret accurately and neutrally β both for the parties involved and for the court itself.
Unlike translators, who work with written documents, court interpreters specialize in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting in courtrooms. This requires not only linguistic precision but also an understanding of legal terminology and procedural workflows.
What types of proceedings do I cover?
I work in all relevant types of courts:
- Criminal proceedings β hearings, interrogations, detention reviews, sentencing
- Civil proceedings β divorces, custody cases, inheritance disputes
- Administrative proceedings β asylum procedures, residence permits, appeals
- Family court proceedings β custody, visitation rights, maintenance
- Non-contentious proceedings β guardianship, estate matters
My languages
I interpret in the following language directions:
- Portuguese β German (including Brazilian Portuguese)
- Spanish β German (including Latin American Spanish)
- Portuguese β Spanish (for hearings with mixed language groups)
- English as a working language for international proceedings
Why a sworn court interpreter?
Swearing-in is more than a formality. It means:
- Legal recognition β my swearing-in qualifies me for interpreting assignments in court proceedings
- Professional confidentiality β I am bound by professional secrecy under Section 10 of the GISA Act
- Technical qualification β verified knowledge of legal terminology in both languages
- Neutrality β I interpret impartially for all parties involved
